WHAT ARE THE MAPS?

Through this browser interface you can follow a 3-dimensional version (using Macromedia Shockwave) of five of the "wayfromhome" maps as drawn by refugees from Iraq, Iran and The Democratic Republic of Congo with a short audio track edited from their narration of the walk.

THE CONTEXT OF THE MAPS

The maps are presented as they were hand-drawn in the moment of remembering, with the readjustments and realignments that are inevitable in the negotiation between the memory, the present and the page. Without any editing or touch-up, the forms of the original maps have been given a 3-dimensionality to accentuate the two layers and two places. The landmarks of the place called home are presented as objects hovering above the flat plane of Plymouth.

To explore the walks click the mouse on the names that appear in red at the top of the this page. If you just want to listen to their narration, click on the MP3 link to download or listen to the recording.

HOW DO I USE THEM?

The maps are each framed with the interface control panel at the bottom, allowing a number of options for interacting with the maps:

By clicking on the button you can follow the path of a short pre-set video sequence and listen to the related audio track. The "show all" button will stop the video sequence.

By clicking on the control panel arrows indicating different directions, you can take a ‘walk’ at your own pace moving through and exploring the 3-dimenionsal landscape of each map.

When you roll the computer mouse over a landmark on the map, a photographic image of a Plymouth landmark pops up at the bottom of the screen with text re-naming it or intertwining it with the remembered landmark of the mapmaker's home.

I CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING

The system will only 'light' up the button after the voiceover has loaded into memory. This may take a few moment, depending on the strength of your internet connection. Please wait (up to 3 minutes) for the data to load, after which the button will become enabled. Please also check that your system is capable of playing sounds by playing a sound using another application.

I CAN'T SEE THE BUTTONS

When you open the walk window if the button doesn't appear on the screen or is covered up at the bottom of the screen, then do the following:
Go to View and scroll down to "Status Bar" and release the mouse.

IF YOU ARE VIEWING THIS FROM A CD OR DVD

If you accidentally close the windows, here is how to reopen them:
Click on the Explorer icon (blue 'E') in the dock and once open go to File in tool bar and then 'open file'. Click on 'untiltled CD' and then the 'open this.html' file.
